What courses do I have to take to earn an undergraduate degree in Marketing?

The B.S. in Marketing is a selective admission degree program.  In order to be certified as a Marketing major before beginning upper division studies (300 and 400 level courses), you must complete a group of ten lower division courses with a minimum GPA of 2.50.  These courses prepare you to be successful in upper level marketing and business courses.  For example, a solid foundation in economics (gained in ECO 200 and ECO 201) is necessary to realize maximum value from MKT 305 Principles of Marketing.

Where do I go for advising and when should I schedule an appointment?

The Advisor/Lecturers in the Advising Center advise students in a variety of areas including: course selection, degree requirements, professional development and student concerns.  BUS 101, a course that prepares students for the expectations of the College of Business is taught by the Advisor/Lecturers, who all hold MBAs from various institutions.  Advising includes all majors with the Haile/US Bank College of Business as well as recruitment and programming.
The center’s role also consists of serving and advising probation, suspension and other students who are experiencing academic difficulties. They counsel and register any such student by appointment.  In order to be ready for Priority Registration, it's best to make an appointment with your advisor about a month in advance of your assigned registration time. What types of scholarships are available?

NKU has established several scholarship programs. Various scholarships are based on grades, class rank and extracurricular activities. To apply and see the current listing of scholarships please visit

What is a certificate in Sports Business?

The post-baccalaureate Certificate in Sports Business is designed for holders of a Bachelor’s degree in any field who wish to enhance their educational credentials in order to pursue management and leadership opportunities in the sports and recreational industries. Enrolled students are advised that the Marketing Faculty periodically revise and update the program of study, including course requirements, leading to the Certificate in Sports Business.  The requirements for your Certificate program are those specified in the University Catalog in effect on the date of your admission to the Certificate program (your “catalog year”) and may be different from those noted on this website.  All students should consult with the College of Business Advising Center staff for personal counseling on the requirements for your Certificate.  Students enrolled in this Certificate program must meet all course pre-requisites except class standing and certification.  For the most current requirements please go here.

What is a certificate in Marketing Research?

The post-baccalaureate Certificate in Marketing Research is designed for holders of a Bachelor’s degree in any field who wish to enhance their educational credentials in order to pursue management and leadership opportunities in the marketing research industry.  Marketing research is the gathering and analyzing of information used to assist organizations in decision-making and has become a critical function for companies of all sizes. Enrolled students are advised that the Marketing Faculty periodically revise and update the program of study, including course requirements, leading to the Certificate in Marketing Research. What types of co-op opportunities are available and how do I apply for one?

Co-op is available to marketing or Sports Business majors and must be coordinated with a faculty advisor.  The faculty advisor can change from semester to semester so please contact the department to find out who the current advisor is.  The phone number is 859-572-6582. If I want a minor in marketing what courses do I have to take?

High-performing organizations in today’s competitive business and not-for-profit environments expect all team members to actively participate in creating and maintaining relationships with customers and other stakeholders.  The Minor in Marketing offers students in any major at NKU the opportunity to acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed to be well-equipped to meet this challenge and add additional value to your Bachelor’s degree. Is there some sort of communication tool used to communicate to all Marketing and Sports Business majors?

We have established a Blackboard course specifically for the purpose of communicating to all marketing and sports business majors.  When your major is declared, you will automatically be enrolled in the course. We use the list of students to send mass emails and to post announcements.

I now have a degree in Marketing, how do I go about finding a job in the Cincinnati area?

  • Register with Career Development Center.
  • Attend all career networking events at NKU and find others in the area (e.g. sponsored by Chambers Commerce, trade associations etc.) to attend.
  • Make Faculty members aware that you are in the market, and aware of what type of position you are seeking.
